What is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy is a structured, one-on-one therapeutic approach focused on helping you overcome specific mental health challenges. Unlike unstructured "talk therapy" that can feel aimless, our individual therapy in Michigan combines evidence-based psychological techniques with clear goals and measurable progress designed specifically for adults dealing with anxiety, worry, depression, and overthinking.

At Steady Mind, PLLC, our individual therapy goes beyond weekly venting sessions. We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Metacognitive Therapy (MCT)—proven approaches that help you identify thought patterns, challenge distorted beliefs, and develop practical skills rather than simply discussing problems without solutions.

We serve clients virtually throughout Michigan, with in-person group workshops held in Grand Rapids at Gilda's Club. Whether you're in Ann Arbor, East Lansing, Troy, Kalamazoo, or anywhere in Michigan, our individual therapy program is accessible, effective, and tailored to your specific needs.

Your space to unravel and build.
Healing with structure.

Individual therapy is more than just talking about problems—it's actively building the skills to solve them. Our individual therapy in Michigan goes beyond traditional counseling. We teach you structured, evidence-based techniques to identify automatic thoughts, challenge cognitive distortions, and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier patterns.

We specialize in helping high-functioning individuals who feel successful externally but overwhelmed internally. If you're juggling multiple responsibilities while your mental health suffers, our therapy provides the framework to reclaim your peace.

"Therapy should be structured and goal-directed, not aimless conversation."

Our Michigan-based individual therapy goes beyond generic counseling approaches. We use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Metacognitive Therapy (MCT)—evidence-based frameworks proven to reduce anxiety and depression symptoms.

Research shows this approach is especially effective for:

  • Adults struggling with chronic anxiety and worry
  • Professionals experiencing burnout or workplace stress
  • Individuals with perfectionist tendencies and procrastination
  • Anyone stuck in negative thought loops or rumination
  • People who've tried therapy before without meaningful results

Through our structured 12-16 session program, you'll learn to identify cognitive distortions, recognize rumination patterns, challenge irrational beliefs, and develop behavioral activation strategies rather than remaining stuck in analysis paralysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between therapy at Steady Mind and other practices?
A: Many therapy practices use an unstructured, "talk about whatever is on your mind" approach that can feel aimless. We use structured, evidence-based protocols (CBT, MCT) with clear goals, homework assignments between sessions, and measurable progress tracking using standardized assessments.
How long does individual therapy take?
Most clients see significant improvement within 12-16 sessions (3-4 months) when meeting weekly. We reassess progress every 4-6 sessions to ensure we're on track.
What if I've tried therapy before and it didn't help?
This is extremely common. Many of our most successful clients had unsuccessful therapy experiences before finding us. Often, previous therapy lacked structure, specific goals, or evidence-based techniques.
Will I need to do homework between sessions?
Yes, therapy homework (we call them "practice assignments") is essential for change. These typically take 10-20 minutes per day and might include thought monitoring or practicing coping skills. Research shows clients who do homework improve significantly faster.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes, we accept most major Michigan insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and Priority Health. We're in-network with 10+ Michigan insurers.
